Polish Patriot romps home in feature

Padmanabhan trained Polish Patriot romped home in the K N Chennabasappa Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. The progeny of Polish Precedent who perhaps excelled in the soft underfoot conditions zipped away from favourite Shotgunn and the rest to win in impressive fashion. Polish Patriot, who missed one year of racing due to a splint bone fracture, has been nursed back to peak fitness and in the form that he is in, he should graduate as a graded race performer as he will enjoy pull in weights.

Polish Patriot stood out in the paddock parade. Though both Polish Patriot and Shotgunn almost began as joint favorites, the latter received stronger support as his last loss to Red Renegade over a seven furlong trip was considered as a delayed response from the horse and over the mile long trip, everything was expected to fall in place. Desert Rule and Blink showed the way as Polish Patriot moved smoothly from the outside draw to settle in third position. Shotgunn was tracking the favourite a couple of lengths adrift. Rounding the final turn, jockey Imran Chisty got busy on Polish Patriot as he goaded the favourite to take over the running which he did with minimum of fuss. Shotgunn went in hot pursuit but the way Polish Patriot was galloping in front, it was clear that the race had been well settled even before the favourite warmed up to the task. Equidae was a faraway third.

Since the Sun had not shown up for nearly a week, there was anxiety that Thursday’s heavy downpour would warrant a cancellation of races. However, the Sun shone brightly even if at intervals resulting in the going being officially declared as good, with penetrometer reading of 4.5 cms coming as a surprise. However, the going did not unduly affect the performance of horses though the kick back was a disconcerting factor to both the horses and the jockeys.

Irfan Ghatala’s Sunstone who had been prepared systematically was the favourite to win the 1400 metres Cape Dance Plate, a race for maiden three year olds but the odds drifted out surprisingly close to race time with Americus coming in for sustained support. Love Me Tender had her own share of supporters. Sunstone steadily moved up to take over the running relegating Love Me Tender from that position. With Americus ranging along side Love Me Tender, the latter lost some ground as the kick back caused the horse to shy away a bit. Jockey Ranjeet Singh had to bring the horse wide and in the process, had to cover some extra ground. Sunstone cruised into the lead but the win did not look as easy as it promised at the top of the straight. Love Me Tender finished with a rush only to miss the berth narrowly. Spark of Knight ran on to finish third.

Logans Run, who had come down a lot in scale, won the Classical Act Plate (Div I) at nourishing odds from Poetic whose runaway tactics resulted in her slackening in the final stages of the race. Spark of Isis, who was the firm favourite, had all the chances but could not pick up steam and ended up third. There was inspired support for Born Beauty but the six year old mare graced the wrong end of the field throughout the race. On A Roll who last supporters steadily in the ring won the lower division of the race despite the market trend suggesting that his chances of a repeat win were not bright. Astounding Blue was sluggish and had to travel wide all through as jockey Suraj Narredu was unable to maneuver a better position or a stronger response. As is his wont, Astounding Blue was full of running when the cause was lost. The odds went up on Bid For Glory and the mare was never in the reckoning.

Darius Byramji trained Kingdomofdreams let down his supporters for the third time in succession. He shaped to have the measure of his opponents in the D S Ranganath Memorial Cup (Div I) as he surged into a big lead with a furlong out but Lester, who was loitering in the rear, sliced the opposition without any apparent effort on the part of the jockey. The race was famed in memory of betting ring supervisor Ranganath who had contributed significantly to the coffers of the club by getting greater compliance of bookmakers while writing their coded bets. The Senator, who came in for solid support, ran dismally. Cash Is King smashed the field in the lower division of the race, winning as he pleased from Hidalgo.

Elite Land made 11th unsuccessful attempt to come out of the maidens’ ranks. Spark of desire came in for sustained support to end up as a firm favourite but the race itself threw as a surprise as the market fancies found Sky Glider in no mood to relent as the filly left them standing to win by a widening margin of four lengths. Elite Land who disputed the lead with the eventual winner, tired out to finish second.

Favourite A Move To Remember recorded an encore when he successfully held off the late rally from Ice Mint who covered good ground in the final furlong but fell short narrowly. Sparkling Cat was a close third.
