Kyles of Bute swamps opposition on day of upsets

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Kyles of Bute brought off a big upset when swamping the opposition in the Gr 3 Bangalore City Gold Cup, the feature event of Sunday’s races. The day’s races did not run kindly for punters as just one well backed favourite obliged in the card of eight events. One jackpot hunter took home a whopping amount of Rs 14,32,977 for successfully nominating the multi pool event. He surely deserved the booty as he had nominated a couple of horses which at the beginning of the day’s proceedings, few had suspected as having a chance to win.

The progeny of Glory of Dancer are generally not expected to act on soft underfoot conditions. Contrary to this widely held belief, Kyles of Bute in fact enjoyed the conditions greatly as he came from way off the pace to leave the front running Captivating and Palazzio’s Sun standing. Palazzio’s Sun had always won in firmer going but apart from the going, the stress of running in such conditions also took additional toll as he bled during the race.

Palazzio’s Sun was the favourite to win with Captivating receiving inspired support though the filly was running for the second time within a short span of time. Bhagirathi who had run a mighty race in her last outing while finishing third to Celestial Way, was also expected to be concerned at the finish.

Jockey Sampson set a suicidal pace on Captivating which not only undid her chances but also that of Palazzio’s Sun who went in chase of her. Captivating packed up on turning for home and Palazzio’s Sun shaped to take charge but was not going anywhere under pressure. Kyles of Bute, who was languishing at the tail end of the field till the final two furlongs, sped past the struggling front runners and won by a widening margin of four lengths. Diamond Hunter ran on to edge out Palazzio’s Sun from the runner up berth. Bhagirathi ran dismally.

It was a big day for Arjun Mangalorkar as he saddled a treble. Emerald had all the chances but Waltz Away who had run a forward race in his debut run was widely expected to build on that effort and win. Waltz Away took a good jump but stumbled soon after causing his jockey Imran Chisty to be thrown off. The Darling Boy led on sufferance till the final furlong before jockey Sampson loosened his grip on Emerald who skipped away to record a handsome win. The Darling Boy finished a distance in front of third placed Chhota Bheem.

Winner number three for Arjun came through favourite Sky Diver in the concluding race of the day. The favourite gave no cause for concern for his supporters as he led all the way before bursting clear of his opponents. Badda Rupaiyaa, who came in for spirited support to come in place, finished with a flourish after a sluggish start and tailing the field till the final turn.

For the second day running, trainer Puttanna successfully brought off a well disguised gamble. Sarang, who had not been seen running to his potential all this while, was backed by only those in the know. The others who look at the odds board for guidance realized the shape of things to come rather too late in the day to profit by the sudden swing in odds in favor of Sarang who was entrusted to N Harsha who is rarely astride winners. True Impression and Sound Bet were the market fancies. The fancied duo were battling it out with a furlong to go in the race but their foray in front was short-lived once Sarang picked up speed and went past these runners like a superior class horse. When horses like Sarang wins, those who go by the book of form can be expected to get a big hit. On Friday, Lestor had won as a long shot like a better quality horse.

Star Assembly who was a final entry for the winter Derby, had been campaigned mostly over shorter trips but after his continuous failures, was run over nine furlongs in the Doaba Stud Plate, possibly more in hope than with any real expectation. Leonardo, who is yet to see the winning post, was strongly backed to win though Native Talent was the strong favourite for the race. Jockey John rode a poor race on Lush Lashes by unwisely engaging in a duel for supremacy at the top of the field with Leonardo instead of letting the latter to surge ahead and give Lush Lashes chance to settle down and conserve her energy for the final run in for home. Their needless duel in front undid the chances of both. While Leonardo sent distress signals even before the final turn, Lush Lashes who went into the lead was easily collared by Star Assembly who stretched away for a big win. Native Talent was a faraway third.

Rezoom was the favourite to win ahead of Born To Fly, Golden Quest and Spark of Atan. Deep Blue Sky who was running with a great chance was surprisingly ignored in the ring as Suraj Narredu had preferred to partner Rezoom. Modern Art set the pace over the mile and quarter trip before running out of steam at the top of the straight. Born To Fly who was expected to figure at the finish was a beaten cause long before the contestants were sighted at the final turn. Golden Quest showed up prominently but the filly began to drift under pressure as jockey Imran Khan relied more on the whip than in aiding the horse with a hands and heels approach. Rezoom managed to get the better of Golden Quest close home and even as his supporters could breathe easy, Deep Blue Sky flashed with a big run only to miss the berth by a whisker. Spark of Atan who was running for the first time just a month after he was gelded, was a well beaten fourth.

Neil Darashah’s Carnival of Joy led all the way and won the Udhagamandalam Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 10 to 25. Carnival of Joy proved too superior as Rainbow Rising who went in chase of the winner, tired out and was passed by Summer Wine in the shadow of the post. Amith Cady’s Legend Reborn, who was the firm favourite, ran a pathetic race. The lower division of the race was won by Sharat Kumar’s Attaturk who beat Aetius by a distance. Favourite Trillion Win made no show.
