Magnanimity romps home in feature

Ganapathy trained Magnanimity romped home in the S M Ramakrishna Rao Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, which featured the lackluster card of eight events that were gone through on Saturday. The five year old progeny of China Visit had been pretty consistent and in the hands of Frenchman Ladjadj Stephane, won with a degree of comfort. Lady Duff, who was expected to be in the thick of things, ran poorly and finished off the frame. After the high of the Derby last week, racing was pedestrian.

Lady Duff began as the favourite but found supporters deserting her close to race time. Magnanimity was well backed with Soberano considered as a possible upset prospect in the race. Another Destiny led from the start and brought the field into the final stretch before fading out from contention. Lady Duff showed up briefly but it was clear that Magnanimity who was devouring ground on the wide outside was going to sweep them all. Magnanimity finished with a flourish to win easily from top-weighted Jersey Pride who nosed out Soberano for the runner up berth.

Ladjadj had earlier steered the well backed Time Flies to a facile win in the 1200 metres D M Shivaswamy Memorial Cup (Div II). Best Time, who was the second favourite, was tardy at the gates and was not in contention thereafter. Jockey Ladjadj angled Time Flies to get a clear run between the front running Panchakshari and Leon Cavallo inside the final furlong and the favourite quickened nicely to go clear of the field. Leon Cavallo ran on to finish second ahead of Sweet Timer. Kingdomofdreams yet again let down as he failed to oblige in the upper division of the race where lesser fancied Nox held off the late rally of the favourite. On A Roll too finished on strongly to be a close third. Astounding Blue who was running after a long lay off was full of running at the finish. With a step up in distance, he should oblige next time out.

Arjun Mangalorkar’s Ailsa, who had a good forward run last time out, came from the rear of the field to pick up the front runners one by one to win with ease from Gazaki and Recharged, the Sir Bruce Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three year olds. Padmanabhan trained Duchess of York had it easy in the lower division of the race. After tracking The Darling Boy into the straight, the daughter of Burden of Proof swept past the front runner and won pulling up with jockey Harish not having to be aggressive on the horse. The timing of one minute 0.7.59 seconds was almost a second faster than that clocked by the winner of the upper division of the race.

John who rode Ailsa had it easy on favourite Youre Stunning in the Confucius Plate (Div II). Youre Stunning, who had let down his supporters a couple of times, had no problem in beating the opposition pointless as a firm favourite. Sprawling Elegance led the field from the start but withered under the onslaught of the favourite. Moody Way To Fantasy closed with a rush to edge out Sprawling Elegance from the runner up berth. Samar Singh trained Little Splendour earlier had brought off a big upset in the upper division of the race in the hands of apprentice jockey Chethana. Little Splendour made the entire running and then held off the spirited bid of Perfect Analysis.

Southern Pearl was the betting rage in the mile long Belmont Plate but the Amit Caddy trainee who attempted a start to finish mission, was caught up by the well backed Powergrid inside the distance post. Southern Pearl however thwarted Chesterford Touch’s bid for the second spot.
