Gypsy Magic can cast a spell

The Gr 1 Kingfisher Derby, the Blue Riband of the Bangalore Summer Season, to be held on Sunday, has an intriguing look about it. Though the cream of three year olds at this centre are in the fray, the reason why one cannot point out a single horse as being outstanding is because of the fact that one can detect a flaw in all the contestants.

Gypsy Magic can pull it off but the question mark about her prospects rests with her behavior during the race. She has shown a distinct aversion to running in a crowded field but has run brilliantly when she has raced far away from the rest. One has to see whether World’s leading jockey Richard Hughes has an answer to the wayward ways of the temperamental filly. If Hughes gets the better of her and gets Gypsy Magic to focus on racing, she should emerge victorious.

Jacqueline was an impressive winner of the Fillies Trial Stakes. One is not sure whether she can extend her supremacy to the longish trip of 2000 metres. Her trainer Pesi Shroff thinks the filly has made good improvement. The filly has to overcome the bad draw and the added pressure of running as a favourite.

Aboline blotted his copybook last time when his performing abilities came down significantly when essaying over a longer trip of a mile. He was outstanding in all his efforts over seven furlongs. Though he has the breeding to go far, it remains to be seen whether he can tackle the extended trip effectively. The fact that he performed miserably last time out diminishes one’s enthusiasm though his trainer Arjun Mangalorkar feels that one cannot write off a horse merely because of one bad run.

Classerville somehow has failed to catch the imagination of many. He was unlucky to lose a mile long race at Mumbai but because he failed against Aboline over a shorter trip, he was not given a chance to run in the Colts Trial Stakes. Classerville has had a wonderful mock race over the Derby distance and his performance capabilities have seen a remarkable upward trend whenever he has gone over a trip longer than seven furlongs. He has been drawn favorably and has the credentials to pull it off.

The got abroad Polish Patriot won both his outings in fine fashion and though many reckon that he is short on experience, his trainer Padmanabhan does not think so.

Astral Flash missed out on a race due to a minor setback but she has the ability to be right there at the finish.

In the other races of the day, my suggested bets are Alacrity, African Sky and Table Mountain. Since these three horses at cramped odds, for those seeking to take a chance at bigger odds, Oban and Equidae are the recommended bets.
