Keeneland to provide diverse choice

Indian buyers will surely have problem of plenty as the importation restriction of pregnant mares from USA and England are being eased by the government. The Keeneland Sales traditionally have been mega affairs, with the horses on offer matching every expectation and purse. The Keeneland Thoroughbred Racing and Sales representatives, W.B.Rogers Beasley (Director of Racing) and Chauncey Morris (Sales & Marketing Associate).hosted a reception to Indian breeders and a select gathering on the eve of the running of the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby at Bangalore on Friday. Goffs has been the flavor of Indian buyers in the last few years but the scene is set to change dramatically with USA and England offering a bigger pool to choose from.

Leading Indian breeders Zavaray Poonawalla, Ameeta Mehra, A K S Brar, F D Wadia, Khusro Dhunjibhoy, and Padmanabh Ruia among others were present at the reception. Incidentally, the Kingfisher Derby which is scheduled for Sunday will have two representatives from Keeneland sales in the form of Aboline and Astral Flash as the dams of both these horses were bought at Keeneland.

Keeneland is synonymous with the very best in Thoroughbred racing and sales. The sale catalogue runs into several books. As the world’s largest Thoroughbred auction house, Keeneland is the pre-eminent market for yearlings and breeding stock and sees the biggest congregation of buyers from all over the world.

For Indian breeders, the November breeding Stock Sale is of particular interest as pregnant mares are bought at this sale. North American Thoroughbreds are the most sought after in the world, and today form the foundation bloodlines for a growing number of countries, such as Argentina, South Africa, Russia, and India.

Overall, Keeneland sells a remarkably high percentage of stakes winners and has sold 17 Kentucky Derby winners – including champions Big Brown, Fusaichi Pegasus, Winning Colors, and Alysheba – and an equal number of Preakness Stakes’ winners. Indians cannot buy and race yearlings as there are a number of restrictions besides these horses not being permitted to run in classics. As such, the Indian buyers have looked at Keeneland Sale for buying mares and also scout for stallion prospects.

Buying at Keeneland has always been a happy experience as the focus is also on minimizing the risks. India’s leading bloodstock agent Anil Mukhi who is now based in Canada was responsible for Friday’s reception which sought to impress on the innumerable opportunities that Keeneland provides.
