Rimpuche romps home in style

Darius Byramji trained Rimpuche’s aggressive finish enabled the fancied runner to put it across her rivals in the 1200 metres S M Ramakrishna Rao Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. The seven event card was lackluster and after the high of the Derby, racing was a damp squib.

Rimpuche hadn’t won a sprint for a long time but the filly received strong support because she had maintained her zest and had a good forward run over seven furlongs in Equidae’s win. She was well supported ahead of Sugar Ray and Jersey Pride while Mark of Gibraltar who had some credentials, was ignored in the ring because the stable has been struck by lightening. .

Enchanting Girl set a scorching pace as the field set out for the six furlong trip, with Sugar Ray a few lengths adrift followed by Welcome Back, Kyles of Bute, Mark of Gibraltar, Jersey Pride, Rimpuche and the rest. Rounding the final turn, Sugar Ray took charge of the proceedings but he was finding it hard to maintain his supremacy under the sustained challenge of Mark of Gibraltar and even as he was busy wrestling with the latter for supremacy came Rimpuche on the wide outside. The daughter of Rimpuche took off with fierce determination and produced a stunning effort which saw her sail past the battling duo to win in style in the season’s best timing of one minute 12.56 seconds. Mark of Gibraltar edged out Sugar Ray for the second spot while Kyles of Bute retired to finish a tame fourth. Jersey Pride found the pace too hot to handle.

Jockey Wayne Smith rode a double for trainer Dominic. Wayne had to battle hard on Bucephalas on the race track and then take the fight to the Stewards room to get the verdict in his favor. Virtuoso who had let down as an on money favourite last time out, was this time settled behind as Captain’s Lover and Black Beauty led the field in the five and half furlong trip. Bucephalas, who came four horses wide into the straight, had to wage a stiff battle with the front runners and even as he was beginning to get the upper hand came Virtuoso on the wide outside with a flourishing run. Virtuoso overhauled Bucephalas but in doing so rolled over to the rails which caused Bucephalas to be checked by its rider. Bucephalas came in with a second wind to be shy by a long neck. First timer Cinnamon Rose who was the favourite for the race lost all her chances as jockey Imran Chisty chose to run along the rails and he was hampered for room throughout which cost him a possible win. Though the trip was sharp for Cinnamon Rose, she could have won with a clear run and as such, she should be a cinch next time out.

Wayne Smith lodged an objection against S John who rode the winner for crossing him and causing him to check completely which lost him a certain race. Imran Chisty too tried to ride his luck by lodging an objection against the winner and runner up for squeezing him along the rails. The objection lodged by Smith was upheld by the Stewards as Virtuoso was lugging in and had certainly hampered the progress of the runner up. To aid the cause of the runner up was also the fact that the horse which lost his stride, finished on powerfully to reduce the leeway considerably. However, the objection lodged by Imran Chisty who finished third on Cinnamon Rose was overruled.

Music Forever provided Smith with his second win for the day. Music Forever who had twice won in the hands of David Allan in winter, was favored to win though Another Destiny was backed with conviction to repeat. Another Destiny expended all his energy to trying to hit the front from the outside draw so much so that he ran out of steam when he was strongly challenged by Smart And Special and Music Forever. The last named flew home on the wide outside as is his wont and got the better of Smart N Special to land the spoils. Kajuraho finished on to take the third spot.

Trainer Loknath’s Leading Lady was backed to the exclusion of his rivals in the 1400 metres Belmont Park Plate but the favourite shot her bolt after bringing the field into view and was a tame third. Mega Joy who chased the front runner into the straight, went sailing clear and shaped to win but Pretty N Fast who had lost considerable ground at the start, came home with a brilliant rally to get the better of the front runner in the shadow of the post.

The trainer however led in a winner through Zaios who slammed the opposition in the 1200 metres Confucious Plate in the hands of apprentice Sreekanth who seems to be riding with confidence this season. Stagelight and Free Glider along with Satin Wood cornered all the support but all of them flopped miserably. Stagelight who tried runaway tactics packed up on straightening to finish a dismal last. Six-year old Damgood recorded his second win of his career when winning the lower division of the race at the expense of Darktan and Aspiring Seven.

First timer Incredible who was backed to the exclusion of her rivals, dully accomplished the mission in the Sir Bruce Plate (Div II), winning with ease from Star Presence. Mercutio was a well beaten third.
