Wayne Smith drives Mother’s Pride to victory

The driving finish of jockey Wayne Smith enabled Mother’s Pride to rally brilliantly from behind and edge past the front running Silken Thomas to land the spoils in the 1600 metres K N Chennabasapa Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the main event of races held on Thursday. Favourite and top weight Fire Zone was restrained and held too far back to make any impact on the result.

Jockey Suraj Narredu took Silken Thomas on a start to finish mission and cleverly dictated the pace followed by Dare Don, Blink, Guided Missile, Star Wave, Fire Zone, Balance De Power and Mother’s Pride who was a tailed off last. Wayne Smith remained unconcerned at the rear position and made his move only after the horses straightened out for the run in for home which is quite uncharacteristic of him as the jockey prefers to ride with the pace. Silken Thomas came into the straight a few lengths clear of Blink and the rest, with Fire Zone making his run on the wide outside. Silken Thomas shaped like a winner inside the final furlong as Mother’s Pride was left to cover considerable leeway and the other potential challengers had shot their bolt. The race took a dramatic turn when the daughter of Pennine Ridge came up with a ground devouring run thanks to aggressive and powerful finish by her jockey which saw her sail past Silken Thomas in the shadow of the post. Blink was third while Fire Zone was a disappointing fourth. The Darius Byramji trainee was quoted at nourishing odds.

Another good finishing effort by Wayne Smith enabled Royal Treasure to get the better of Ready To Mingle in the 1400 metres Flemington Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Ready To Mingle had a useful lead inside the final two furlongs with Royal Treasure under pressure to cover the leeway but once he found his bearings, the progeny of Diffident overhauled the front runner with some thing in reserve. So Much More held off the challenge of Royal Bank for the third spot. Pleasant Glory recorded an encore when winning the lower division of the race at the expense of Excellent Ability and favourite Luminous Gold in a three horse finish. Pleasant Glory took charge of the proceedings midway through the seven furlong trip and then held off the spirited bid of Excellent Ability. Luminous Gold flattered to deceive as he failed to sustain his flourish.

Amazing Ray had finished a close third to Astral Flash at Mumbai but her subsequent two runs in Bangalore were below par and not true efforts. Now backed strongly to win the 1400 metres Chaitanya Chakram Cup, Amazing Ray came up with a strong run to get the better of Leave It To Me to win comfortably. Dramatic Dancer was a long way third.

Colonel Duff made amends for the last start failure as a fancied runner by winning the Classical Act Plate (Div I) from Tina’s Triumph. Awesome Beauty, who was denied of a clear run in the early part of the race, finished home with a powerful run but lost the third place to Fanaa by a whisker. The positive intent helped Super Sonic to record a long overdue win the lower division of the race where Smart N Special failed to maintain his foray in the front. Enforcer pipped Easy for the third spot.

Half-sister to Derby winning Abs Fabs, Hoten Happening had a profitable outing in the 2000 metres handicap race for horses in the lowest category by just about lasting out to win from Prince Norbert. Pretty N Fast was a well beaten third.

Agility, who had failed to display his true potential in his previous outing, was not considered good enough to win the 1200 metres Ministrella Plate as money poured in the direction of Gold Crown, Jamaican Bolt and Brigade’s Passion. Jamaican Bolt appeared to have the measure of the other two fancied runners inside the final 200 metres but Agility came up with a devastating run on the wide outside to win in great style in the hands of jockey Gaurav Sapra.
