Tomsk pulls it off in a close finish

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Tomsk extricated himself from a difficult position and managed to edge past Dare Don to justify favoritism in the 1400 metres J B Mallaradhya Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday’s races. Fancied runners ran true to expectations, bringing delight to the followers of form.

Tomsk had lost by a whisker to Royal Ambassador in his last outing and on the basis of that run, the progeny of Gasawar enjoyed the confidence off all and sundry though he was carrying the top weight. The consistent Tomsk was not expected to be hard pressed by any one for the simple reason that most contenders in the fray had dropped form. Bottom weighted Afea had run a fair race over six furlongs and he was expected to pose a stiff challenge because of the feather weight that he was carrying this time over the extra furlong.

Milford led the field from the start, with Dare Don in close attendance while the rest were spread out behind. Tomsk did not take a forward position in the early part and was racing in the penultimate position in the eight horse field. It was Dare Don who showed out as the field straightened for the run in for home, with Tomsk left to cover considerable leeway on the wide outside. The task looked difficult inside the final furlong but Tomsk came up with his patented burst of speed and overhauled the front runner in the shadow of the post. Milford ran on to finish third. There was nothing much to write home about the rest of the runners.

Dominic’s Rugged Beauty was rewarded for her consistency. The daughter of Burden of Proof, who had found one better on three occasions, was less fancied than the rest, with Cayenne enjoying maximum support. Rugged Beauty, who was running without blinkers this time, was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey Wayne Smith. The filly appeared to be coming under intense pressure from Rashida but Rugged Beauty skipped away with renewed thrust in the final 100 metres to win impressively in a good timing of one minute 25.7 seconds from Noble Sacrifice who closed with a rush.

It is difficult to fathom what has gone wrong with trainer Ganapathy’s stable. Noble Kingdom who had run a fair fourth in his last outing despite the jockey losing his stirrup at around the 900 metres marker, ran like a damp squib this time out over the extended trip of eight furlongs. After being prominent till the final furlong, Noble Kingdom disappeared without a trace. Henry’s Secret who came in for spirited support close to race time, rallied brilliantly from behind to sail past the rest inside the distance post, to record a comprehensive win over Alchesaye whose flourish did not last long enough to make an impact on the result. Duckworth was a well beaten third.

Another miserable performance of the day came from Criminal Lawyer who failed to build on his last effort like many of his stablemates whose form graph is always uncertain. Flower Alley who had been consistent without winning, picked up speed at a crucial juncture to get the better of Spark of Joy in the final stride of the race to provide trainer Babu Rao, his second winner of the season. Spring A Surprise finished with purpose to take the third spot ahead of Criminal Lawyer.

Alaric recorded an impressive repeat win in the 1400 metres Brave Dancer Plate. After tracking Cindy Girl and She’s A Lady into the straight, favourite Alaric left the field standing to win by a huge margin over an equally well supported Hurricane Bolt. Senora Encima came on the wide outside to finish a poor third.

The 1200 metres Manitou Trophy saw Ice Mint, Spark of Marchador and Imperial Guest being strongly fancied to win but the race itself turned out to be an anti-climax. The Prasanna Kumar trainee Spark of Marchador put in a speedy performance to lead the field from the start and then leaving the rest stranded to win as he pleased. Imperial Guest was a long way second ahead of Gordian Knot while Ice Mint was a poor fourth.

Real Gladiator who had served notice of striking early, duly accomplished the task in the 1100 metres Azhar Plate, the day’s opener, with a comfortable win over late finishing Spark of Salerno and Worth A Million. Amber Star bolted to the front from the start but ran out of steam at the top of the straight and Real Gladiator who was bidding for his turn, easily sailed clear to record an impressive win.

In a race of fluctuating scenario, Flashing Crown held off the spirited bid of Storm Chaser and Persian Rock in a close finish. Admiranda finished strongly on the wide outside to be a close fourth, suggesting that she needs more ground to make her mark.
