Gypsy Magic has it easy in Summer Million

Gypsy Magic bounced back to winning ways with an easy win in the Gr 3 Usha Stud Million, the highlight of Sunday’s races. The temperamental daughter of Placerville did not show any of her aggressive qualities which had seen the filly chart her own course in the race as she settled down nicely in the third position and warmed up to the task inside the final 100 metres and stretched away from the rest to win comfortably. She had the weights in her favour but more importantly, Gypsy Magic raced like a normal, talented horse and showed that she can mature into a great performer on a bigger platform.

Gypsy Magic was the favourite to win the Kingfisher Bangalore Derby but she ran no sort of a race, being settled in the rear and then finishing on when the cause was lost. She had veered out to the wide outside and had run second in the Poonawalla Million and as such, there was always fear that the head strong filly could not be tamed to put in a normal performance. With jockey Appu being declared to ride and the erratic characteristics of the filly weighing in people’s mind, the bookmakers were generous to offer odds close to 2/1, with the rest though quoted at longer odds.

Cruising led the field from D’Artagnan and Divine Gleam as the field set out for the mile long trip. All the horses were stalled and about to take off when Corbett played up and pulled out from the gates. There was considerable delay by the vets examined the horse and then decided to pull him out from the fray. The rest of the runners as a result were stranded inside the gates, waiting for the start. This perhaps affected Systematic who was on the outside draw as she was a fraction slow in taking off. Gypsy Magic was handily placed in fourth position followed by Fleet Indian and the rest, with Leonardo and Bourbon Bay bringing up the rear after the field had traversed the first furlong.

Cruising brought the field into the straight, with D’Artagnan traveling well within himself while Gypsy Magic was being brought into strong contention. In the meanwhile, Fleet Indian slipped through a gap along the rails to essay a strong challenge. While Cruising shifted out slightly under pressure, Gypsy Magic shifted in, causing D’Artagnan to be shut off. Gypsy Magic took her time to warm up and once she did, she was striding big and easily overhauled the front-running Fleet Indian. Cruising ran on to finish third ahead of D’Artagnan who does not appear cut out for longer distances at least at this point of time. Leonardo who had run an impressive second in the Colts Trial Stakes performed poorly which was suggestive of the fact that his previous run was a one off effort. Systematic was sixth.

Alcestis was strongly favoured to win the Squanderer Trophy (Div I), a five and half furlong race for maiden three year olds. Alcestis put in a below par effort while struggling to finish third. Lush Lashes who had let down during the season as an on money favourite, came from way behind to record an easy win over Game Dancer who was an impressive second. Jockey Prakash who was on Step In Style looked back in shock at around the 250 metres marker as his horse lost a stride because of Lush Lashes clipping him from behind. One Track Minded and Devil Grandma were equally well supported to win the lower division of the race. The former prevailed with a start to finish mission, with Devil Grandma make a late bid to cover up the leeway. Jockey John’s riding on the runner has been put under critical scrutiny.

Phoenix Reach could perhaps have recorded an encore in the 1400 metres Poonawalla Stud Plate (Div I) but for the outside draw and jockey Prakash who unwisely expended the horse trying to go to the front so much so that when Flaming Lamborgini and In The Zone charged home with a big run, the front runner was fast running out of his reserves. Flaming Lamborgini won by half a length in a three horse finish, with Phoenix Reach retaining the runner up spot by a whisker. The Spartan was another who slackened close home after leading all the way. Jockey Wayne Smith had The Spartan in front and waited with the horse before driving him into a good lead inside the final two furlongs but the favourite failed to sustain till the post and was passed close home by Affirmed Crown.

Six Shooter has failed to live up to the expectation of turning into a top class sprinter. For the second time running, the speedy son of Six Speed flopped badly. Installed as a strong favourite to win the Col Rajkumar C Desraj Urs Memorial Cup, Six Shooter failed to continue his foray in the front by buckling under pressure. Talisker came through with a powerful run to win as he pleased from Six Shooter, with late rallying Coorg Honey ending up third. Nox who was boxed for an opening, was fourth.

Fantastic Flame recorded an encore with a start to finish mission in the Allied Forces Plate (Div I). Vayuputra came up with a futile late bid to occupy the runner up spot. Romance In the Air just about lasted out to win the lower division of the race from Pinnakini.

Mexikan Wave brought off an upset in the 1400 metres Batu Gantong Plate in a close finish from Great Chieftan whose jockey Jagadeesh has been put under scrutiny by the Stipendiary Stewards for his lack of vigour in his riding.
